Some Community Builder configuration

You will probably want to reorganize your CB modules so that they show up toward
the top of your site. To do that open your joomla control panel screen and select
modules>site modules

Then reorder the modules to your liking. I have moved all the CB modules to
the top left with all the menus below them.

Things To Consider When Choosing A Community Builder Profile Gallery Component

Picking a gallery for your Community Builder site can be difficult. You need to consider how you will use it and how large your community, and therefore your gallery, will become.

Gallery 2 is a great gallery with many features (too many to list visit the Gallery 2 website ) and we should all be thankful for the great bridge that Michiel Bijland has made. With the Gallery 2 bridge you can have users created in Gallery 2 whenever someone registers in Joomla/CB. You can also configure Gallery 2 to create a new gallery for each user. You can even decide when the gallery is created (when the user account is created or when the user first logs in (very cool!). You can also assign quotas to each user. Quotas should be in every multiuser gallery to control how much disk space your users can use but unfortunately not all galleries have them. Gallery 2 is nearly the perfect solution if it wasn't so resource intensive. If you have a small and not very active site you should have little to no problems. If you a large gallery with a very active site you are in for a world of painfully slow page loads. If you read in the gallery forums you will find that other people are having this problem too if you aren't comfortable taking my word for it. The Gallery guys have said they are going to try to speed things up in future versions but if you need a solution now Gallery 2 may be out for you.

Guided Tour of Community Builder on the Joomla Platform

Community Builder (CB) is one of the hottest extensions for Joomla. While the CB component itself is fairly straight forward getting to know what works with it can be a daunting task. Beat and the other guys over at Joomlapolis.com have done a great job in creating a great component with a great community. They even have links to other modules and components that work with Community Builder for Joomla. Even with all that it can still be a trial and error process to see what works for you and your site in particular. That being said I am going to take you on a tour of Community Builder. In the tour I will show you:

How to install Community Builder

You should always read the instructions from the the developer to make sure
you are getting the most up to date information. This How-To assumes you have
NOT installed CB before. If you are upgrading CB you need to take extra steps
that are not covered in the How-To.
This video requires Macromedia Flash with sound and is best viewed with a resolution
of 1024x768 or higher (approx runtime: 3 minutes /Size1.6MB)
In this video we will:

  1. install Community Builders main component - comprofiler.zip
  2. install cblogin.zip module which takes the place of the standard Joomla

How and Why I install joomblog with some of my personal modifications

GO AHEAD AND READ THE ARTICLE BUT IT MAY BE UPDATED SOON. JOOMBLOG 2.3RC1 MAY HAVE FIXED THE DOUBLE REGISTER PROBLEM. I AM LOOKING INTO IT - edited 6/11/2006

If you haven't heard of Joomblog yet you should check it out. It uses native Joomla internals. This keeps it small, fast and very compatible with other extensions. It takes the place of extensions like Akocomment, mosCE or Discussbot, etc. Joomblog currently has four extensions to install:

com_joomblog_2.2 RC4.zip - main component

mod_joomblog_2.2 RC4.zip - module for registering/moderating users to blog

How to install joomlaboard with joomla and CB

For those of you love simple machines forum (smf) or phpbb or [insert your favorite forum here] will probably like to know why I am installing Joomlaboard forum in this guide rather than something else. There are a few reasons

  1. Joomlaboard forum is very easy to install in Joomla. It is a simple component install, as you will see. You should be a pro at component installs by now if you have been following this guide.
  2. Joomlaboard is made for Joomla so the integration is very tight
  3. The integration with Community Builder is very tight as well.

The ease of install wouldn’t stop me from showing you an SMF install or something else if it worked as close as Joomlaboard does with CB. Once JoomlaBoard is installed it works with the private messaging system you install for CB and it uses the profiles created in CB. There is also a plugin for CB to create a tab in the user’s profile page. The other forums lack this tight integration with Joomla/CB. So JoomlaBoard, for the moment at least, is the main choice for CB websites. The bad news is that there are some problems with Joomlaboard. From forums that I have read on various websites that use Joomlaboard (including Joomlapolis.com) I have seen recurring problems with this forum. An example would be Joomlaboards problem file attachments. Sometimes Joomlaboard just doesn’t allow an attachment to be up loaded. Joomlaboard is current working on a new version but I don’t know if it will fix the problems that people have been having with it. We can only hope at this point. All and all Joomlaboard will do what you want it to. You just may run in to an occasional mysterious hiccup that seems solvable. Just know that it may not be you or your users. It probably is just Joomlaboard misbehaving.
